Lupe Alberto Flores is a PhD Candidate in Sociocultural Anthropology at Rice University and wrote:

2023 ALLA Distinguished Career Award
Ana Celia Zentella
Ana Celia Zentella – Professor Emerita of Ethnic Studies at UC San Diego, is an “anthro-political” linguist focused on Latinu varieties of Spanish and English, Spanglish, and language socialization, while challenging linguistic profiling, English-only laws, anti- bilingual education legislation, and damaging federal practices and policies. Her book, Growing up Bilingual: Puerto Rican children in New York (Blackwell, 1997) won the Book Prize of the British Association of Applied Linguistics, and the Book Award of the Association of Latina and Latino Anthropologists.
Manhattan’s Borough President Ruth Messinger declared October 30, 1997 “Doctor Ana Celia Zentella Day” for “her leading role in building appreciation for language diversity and respect for language rights”. She was named Public Intellectual of the Year by the Latino Studies section of LASA (2014) and honored with the Public Outreach & Community Service award by the Society for Linguistic Anthropology (2016). In 2023, Zentella was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
2023 Junior Scholar Outstanding Scholarship and Engagement Award
Julie Torres
Julie Torres is an Assistant Professor of Women’s and Ethnic Studies and the Latina/o/x Studies Certificate Coordinator at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.A. in Anthropology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her work has been published in the journals Meridians, Feminist Anthropology, Anthropology News, and CENTRO. Her book manuscript, Border Zones of Crisis: Community, Resistance and the Puerto Rican Diaspora to Orlando (under contract with NYU Press), ethnographically examines Puerto Rican activism in Orlando, Florida in light of contemporary crises.
This years winners include work from Dr. Leo Chavez, a professor at the University of California-Irvine. In addition Sofia Vicente-Vidal from the University of Oregon also receives this years Student Paper Award.
